Two single vineyards – Hayview Mount Barker Shiraz and Celestial Bay Margaret River Malbec form a harmonious and delicious blend in the second red from Break Free Wines – Little Wing.
Taking a little inspiration from Hendrix, Little Wing combines cool, lush and spicy Shiraz with some extra flesh provided by a small addition of Malbec. With no further additions, the wine is matured in older, French oak barriques for just one year.
What results is a medium-bodied, intensely flavoured wine of violets, spice, coffee, dark chocolate and a full spectrum of red and purple fruits – cherry, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry and plums – lifting to the reverb of a 1968 white Fender Stratocaster…a lick of oak and a soft, gentle finish.
Like all Break Free wines, there is no filtration or fining and minimal sulphur on bottling to keep the wine fresh and lively.
Pair with the song itself, as lyrically Little Wing it is one of several of Hendrix’s songs that reference an idealized feminine or guardian angel-like figure…
